The Brzozowski exhibition resembles the work of the marriage of two outstanding artists. He presents an intimate selection of early drawings by Barbara Gawdzik-Brzozowska (1927-2010) from 1952-1969 and paintings and drawings by Tadeusz Brzozowski (1918-1987) from 1940-1987. Works - apart from two paintings by Tadeusz from the collections of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane - come from a family collection.
They worked in one studio for twenty-five years. Extremely talented, versatile, endowed with a unique sense of observation, a unique sense of humor and excellent mastering of the workshop.
Barbara - known primarily as the author of elegant portraits of ladies and cats - was also a world-renowned drawer, master of lines, graphic artist, outstanding illustrator and talented designer.
Tadeusz - an eminent painter, illustrator, stage designer, educator - in the sixties he was one of the leading artists in Europe. As one of the few contemporary painters, he mastered the technological secrets of the material, which he used as well as masters. He developed a unique "alchemy of color", which - as Aleksander Wojciechowski wrote - was an exceptional phenomenon in the European art of the twentieth century.
Works of both artists, although seemingly very different, have much in common. They are connected by the incredible richness of the line, shapes, content and often funny, ambiguous title. They played with form with extreme lightness and humor, they used bold perspective abbreviations, they played with contrast in a sense, played with both a sweeping line and large planes of color. An intense color accent in both gives the attention to details, sometimes introducing an element of the grotesque to the performance.
In the worlds created by Barbara Gawdzik-Brzozowska and Tadeusz Brzozowski, beauty immediately turns into ugliness, seriousness turns out to be a joke, under which often drama is veiled drama. There is an atmosphere of mystery here, a special kind of tenderness and irony.
The work of Brzozowski, despite the passage of years, still touches, surprises, entertains, inspires new discoveries and searches.
